The July 2026 quarterly newsletter of the Historical Society of the D.C. Circuit features:
- A recap of the Society’s June 10, 2026 program, Anatomy of a False Statement Case, which brought to life key moments from the Scooter Libby trial. The program featured re-enactments from key aspects of the case from members of the original prosecution and defense teams, and prominent D.C. criminal trial lawyers. The program also included Judge Reggie Walton, the trial judge for the case. The program offered a vivid portrait of what it means to try a high-profile false statements case in this Circuit.
- A remembrance of Judge Rosemary Collyer, who passed away on June 7, 2026. Judge Collyer served on our District Court for more than twenty years. Judge Collyer was highly regarded for her careful judicial reasoning, humility, and generous mentoring.
- Highlights from two oral histories recently posted on the Society’s website —
- Tom Green’s oral history traces his career and the arc of Washington’s federal legal culture across six transformative decades — from his service as an Assistant U.S. Attorney beginning in 1967 through his prominent roles as defense counsel in Watergate, Iran-Contra, the Keating Five, and the Manafort prosecution.
- Gennine Hagar served with distinction as a probation officer for more than three decades, rising to become Chief Probation Officer of the U.S. Probation Office for the District of Columbia. Her oral history recounts her experiences and reflects the bedrock decency that defined her approach to this vital work.
- A report on the Portrait Dedication Ceremony for Judge Amy Berman Jackson of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, captured in technicolor by Board member Robert Trout, a former colleague of the Judge. The one-of-a-kind ceremony included heartfelt and humorous tributes to the Judge’s distinguished career, and even Broadway showtunes.
- Congratulations to Senior Judge Royce C. Lamberth upon his receiving the Federal Bar Association’s Elaine R. “Boots” Fisher Award for Exemplary Community, Public, and Charitable Service at its annual meeting in September 2025.
- A summary of the Society-sponsored panel held in April 2026 at the William B. Bryant American Inn of Court, discussing Soul of the Court: The Trailblazing Life of Judge William Benson Bryant Sr. The panel was moderated by Dean Roger A. Fairfax of Howard University School of Law and featured Judge Emmet G. Sullivan and William B. Schultz, a partner at Zuckerman Spaeder and former law clerk to Judge Bryant (1974–75).
- A story about a new article posted on the Society’s website in honor of the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The article provides a look at two of the D.C. Circuit’s earliest judges — Chief Judge William Kilty and Judge James Markham Marshall — who served in the Continental Army during the American Revolution.
- A welcome to the Society’s newest Board members, joining the Society as of the Board’s April 30th Annual Meeting.
- A selection of recent Society social media posts. The posts included excerpts in honor of Mother’s Day from the oral histories of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Judge Patricia Wald, and Judge Joyce Hens Green. Likewise, Father’s Day posts featured excerpts from the oral histories of Justice Antonin Scalia, Judge Stanley Harris and Judge Henry Kennedy, Jr.
