BIOGRAPHCAL INFORMATION
ALEXANDER E. BENNETT

Alexander E. Bennett is a partner of Arnold & Porter LLP in Washington, D.C.
He attended the University ofMichigan (B.A. 1961) and the University of Michigan
Law School (J.D. 1963).
Mr. Bennett has spent his professional career in private practice in Washington, D.C.
During that time he has represented private parties, state agencies, sovereign states and
others in numerous cases in federal and state courts and before administrative agencies. The
subject matters of such cases have included substantive areas of law touched upon in the
interview of Judge Sporkin. Specifically, Mr. Bennett is familiar generally with the
operation of savings and loan associations in the 1980s, having represented the State of
Maryland Deposit Insurance Fund Corporation as well as private parties on issues arising
from the savings and loan crisis during that time. He has also dealt with antitrust issues in
representing parties in antitrust cases initiated by private parties and federal agencies.
Mr. Bennett has also addressed sovereign-immunity issues under the Foreign Sovereign
Immunities Act brought against sovereign states in federal courts. He has also represented
parties in cases arising under the securities laws and has occasionally been involved in
matters before the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Mr. Bennett is married to Brooksley Born. They have five children and three
grandchildren.
