October DCCHS Newsletter

The latest newsletter from the Historical Society of the D.C. Circuit includes:

  • a tribute to Steve Pollak. For almost thirty years, Steve led the Society, transforming it from a small organization into one of the most active and important judicial historical societies in the country. To say he will be missed is an understatement.;
  • a peek into the Society’s Oral History vault. Chief Judge William B. Bryant, the first black jurist to serve as Chief Judge of the District Court, left his considerable mark of integrity and decency on the halls of the United States Courthouse.;
  • a newly published Oral History of Carol Garfiel Freeman. One of only fifteen women in the Columbia Law School class of 1961, Freeman had a storied career in New York and Washington, D.C.;
  • a sad farewell to Steve Pollak’s incomparable assistant Robin Biggins. Robin has been indispensable to the Society’s day-to-day operations.;
  • the addition of Judge David S. Tatel’s portrait to the U.S. Court of Appeals where Judge Tatel has served since October 1994.; and,
  • notes from the Executive Director, Leith Alvaro, with a special request for expressions of interest in volunteering for the Society’s Oral History Program.
