The painting itself is in excellent condition. The frame shows some signs of wear and tear, including cracks and missing paint.

Artist
Frederick Carl Smith (1868 – 1955) studied at the Cincinnati Art School prior to studying in Paris in the 1890s where he exhibited in 1897 and 1899. He worked primarily as a portrait painter in Washington, D.C. after he returned to the United States in 1900. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design and at the Corcoran Gallery prior to moving to California where he was one of the founding members of the Laguna Beach Art Association.
